Read and Listen

A lighthouse is a tall building near the sea. It has a strong light at the top. Ships can see the coast because of the light. They can see it at night. They can see it in bad weather.

People build lighthouses on the coast, on islands, or on rocks near the water. The light is high, so ships can see it from far away. Ships can follow the light and know where the land is. This helps them stay safe.

In the past, some people lived in lighthouses. They were called lighthouse keepers. Lighthouse keepers took care of the light. They made sure it worked every night.

Today, many lighthouses do not need a person inside. Machines can turn the light on and off. Some old lighthouses still work, and some are places people visit. Many visitors like old lighthouses because they are beautiful.
